A Day in the Life: UCF Student Shadows DWK Attorney to Discover the Heart of Client Advocacy

time to read: 2 minutes

Ever wondered what a day in the life of a personal injury attorney really looks like?

This summer, DWK had the pleasure of welcoming Sophia Vargas, a University of Central Florida student with aspirations of becoming a lawyer, to shadow personal injury attorney KYLE MORAT. From a client deposition to lunch with a client, sitting in on potential client calls, and attending a legal expert conference, Sophia spent the day immersed in the real work of lawyering—not in the courtroom, but in the heart of what matters most: the clients. She observed firsthand the importance of building trust, actively listening, asking the right questions, and gathering the facts that shape every case.

Here’s how she summed up her experience:

Q: What surprised you most about “A day in the life of a personal injury attorney?”

A: What surprised me most was how much time and care went into each client. I was expecting a day of back-to-back meetings and quick calls but Kyle took his time and was intentional with each person he spoke to. He is able to read people very well and knew just how to speak with each person to really get to the root of everything and make sure the client felt comfortable yet confident.

Q: Was there a moment today that made you think “I could really see myself doing this?”

A: Absolutely! I love that being a personal injury attorney requires a lot of face-to-face with clients. Seeing Kyle break down everything for the clients and come up with strategies was so cool to see in real time.

Q: If you had to summarize the day in one word or phrase what would it be?

A: Inspiring!

Q: What skills did you see in action that you want to develop in yourself?

A: One skill that I saw and would love to grow in is being strategic. Every conversation was productive and professional. Seeing the attorneys come together and come up with strategies on the spot was awesome. I hope to be that quick on my feet when I start my legal career one day.

Q: How would you describe DWK Law to your peers after spending the day here?

A: I would describe DWK Law to my peers as both an amazing firm and environment. I can tell they genuinely care about their clients and have passion for the work they do. Everybody in the office works so well together and builds each other up.

Q: What was the most TV lawyer moment you saw today?

A: Hearing an attorney make an objection and say “don’t answer that” to a client during a deposition was so exciting to see, just like I see in the crime shows!

Q: Lawyer life=_______

A: Exciting and intensive.

Q: Best part of shadowing?

A: The best part of shadowing was getting an idea of the day-to-day operation of a personal injury attorney. I saw everything from phone calls, to a deposition, to responding to emails. It has give me a realistic idea of what my future could potentially be. I got some great advice and I am very inspired and excited!
